Overview

At Ford, you’ll work on ideas that matter, alongside passionate people who want to make a global impact. Together, we’re shaping the next era of transportation—grounded in purpose, driven by progress. Make your move.

  • Job Type: Full time
  • Work Type: Hybrid

In this position...
The Prognostics System Engineer is responsible for the system-level implementation and validation of prognostic health management features on vehicle programs. Acting as the Feature Systems Engineer of record for each prognostic, this role introduces those features onto the Bill of Features for impacted programs, and ensures that prognostic algorithms and health indicators are robustly validated end-to-end and deployed against their target programs and model years in accordance with the Feature Development Process. These prognostic features leverage connected vehicle data to predict component degradation, estimate remaining useful life (RUL), and enable proactive maintenance — ensuring reliability, performance, and customer satisfaction in the era of electrification and automation.

What you'll do...

  • Serve as the Feature Systems Engineer of record for each prognostic feature, introducing it onto the Bill of Features for impacted programs and coordinating with program teams on scope and timing.

  • Apply the Feature Development Process rigorously, ensuring each prognostic feature moves through required gates, documentation, and sign-offs specific to its assigned program(s) and model year(s).

  • Author and document system-level feature requirements using Gherkin syntax (Given-When-Then) to enable clear, testable behavior definitions shared across cloud, vehicle, and program teams.

  • Define and allocate feature-level interfaces between vehicle systems, central gateway modules, and cloud prognostic services, confirming implement ability within program constraints (data availability, network bandwidth, compute placement).

  • Plan and execute Design Verification Plans (DVPs) to validate prognostic feature performance end-to-end — from vehicle sensor/data collection through network transport to cloud processing and customer-facing output.

  • Sign off on feature-level performance, conduct real-world evaluations, and lead cross-functional triage to isolate and resolve system/integration issues versus algorithm-level issues, routing the latter to the algorithm development team.

  • Maintain requirements traceability using ALM tools (e.g., Jama, Jira, Team Center) from customer-experience-level goals down to vehicle system requirements, interface definitions, and DVP results.

  • Coordinate with vehicle network/module engineers to ensure prognostic features integrate cleanly onto central gateway modules and existing CAN/LIN/Ethernet architectures without timing or priority conflicts.

  • Analyze connected vehicle and warranty data to validate that deployed prognostic features are performing as intended and to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.

  • Communicate feature status, program impacts, and validation results to program leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.

You'll have...

  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering

  • 5+ years of experience in vehicle systems engineering, automotive diagnostics/prognostics, or related feature development roles.

  • 5+ years of experience authoring and documenting system requirements using Gherkin syntax to support behavior-driven development (BDD) and cross-team clarity.

  • 5+ years of experience decomposing complex features into requirements, interfaces, and test criteria across multiple programs/model years.

  • 5+ years experience applying structured development processes (e.g., Feature Development Process, V-model) within an automotive or similarly regulated environment.

  • 5+ years of experience utilizing the ability to distinguish systems/integration issues from algorithm-level issues.

  • 5+ years of experience with vehicle networking and communication protocols (CAN, LIN, Ethernet) and how data flows from vehicle to cloud.

  • 5+ years of proficiency with ALM/requirements traceability tools (e.g., Jama, Jira, Team Center).

  • 5+ years experience with OBD systems and related regulations.

Even better, you may have...

  • Master's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or related field.
  • Working knowledge of prognostic/PHM concepts (remaining useful life, degradation trends, health indicators) sufficient to collaborate effectively with algorithm development teams
  • Familiarity with MBSE concepts and tools (SysML, MagicDraw) to understand how prognostic function allocation across sensor/gateway/cloud is architected upstream.
  • Experience with quality/reliability documents (DFMEA, boundary diagrams, P-Diagrams) as applied to feature-level validation.
  • Experience with electrical module design, in-vehicle networking (CAN, LIN, FlexRay, Ethernet), and power distribution.
  • Familiarity with Ford-specific diagnostic tools and platforms (e.g., Vanguard/VSCS).
  • Experience with connected vehicle architectures, telematics, and cloud-based data pipelines from a systems integration perspective.
  • Familiarity with SQL and cloud platforms (e.g., GCP) sufficient to interpret telemetry and validation data.
  • Electrical Design & Release and electrical testing experience.
  • Proficiency in programming or scripting languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB, C++) for data processing and diagnostic tool development.
